It is primarily responsible for teaching human physiology within the integrated curriculum in the medical and dental schools, which have a combined annual intake of about 280 students. However, with the integrated, problem-based curriculum at the medical school, the academic staff is also involved in many other teaching-learning activities within the curriculum, particularly as moderators in problem based learning sessions, and the teaching of basic clinical skills at the purpose-built clinical skills laboratory at the medical school. The Department also has a significant teaching role in the clinical postgraduate training programmes. Research covers many areas in Physiology, in particular reproductive physiology, neurophysiology and respiratory physiology. In addition to advancement in knowledge, the research programmes also serve to train physiologists to take up academic positions within the department itself or in other departments and universities.  The Department also provides respiratory function testing services to the university hospital.
