The
department was established in 1983 initially in combination
with hematology unit and blood bank. It initially had facilities
for basic histopathology and cytolopathology services. Since
then, it has progressed to offer immunohistochemistry, electron
microscopy and molecular diagnostic facilities. In 1991, a
human genetic unit was developed. This unit was responsible
to a growing demand in genetic testings and and research on
RNAeomics, genomics, proteanomics. The unit was aptly upgraded
to a Human Genome Center in 1998. In the same year, the hematology
unit also became an independent unit and upgraded to a department
status. Pathology department also has mortuary facilities
and its own pathology museum.
