Elective Program For Visiting Students

WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES USM HEALTH CAMPUS

INTRODUCTION

School of Medical Sciences (SMS), USM is one of the leading universities in Malaysia. USM has been entrusted to launch the first APEX program in Malaysia and is one of the established research universities in ASEAN region

SMS offers a variety of elective programs for those who qualify. It has adequate infrastructure that can realize the dreams of students to gain knowledge in the field of endeavor. It is equipped with a sophisticated library and has trained and experienced teachers and researchers

TYPES OF ELECTIVE PROGRAM OFFERED

1.  Clinical / Hospital based 
2.  Laboratory based 
3.  Community based 
4.  Research based

CLINICAL ELECTIVE

It is ONLY open to the students who already underwent clinical year in their home university. Students may choose to do placements in the department of their interest. They may choose to do placements in medical or surgical based or a combination of posting. However, the minimum period for a placement is two weeks and further information could be referred to Appendix B.

LABORATORY BASED ELECTIVE

SMS has a variety of laboratory facilities. Students can choose to do placement in department of hematology, chemical pathology, pathology, immunology, microbiology, human genetics, and many others. To ensure the application process can be carried out as soon as possible, students are advised to state the learning objectives to be followed. The approval of application will depend on the completeness of the form and present of supervisor in selected department.

COMMUNITY BASED ELECTIVE

Activities related to community based are coordinated by Department of Community Medicine and Department of Family Medicine. Students could join a special program called Community and Family Case Studies, and invited to participate  in  hospital  district  placement  in  "Preventive  and  Primary  Care" posting. However, students can freely determine their own direction based on the learning objectives

RESEARCH BASED ELECTIVE

Those who are interested to carry out research in SMS, they are most welcomed. They need to identify the department that could support their research project and provide a supervisor as an assistant. If the proposal is prepared by the students, they need to ensure that it has been ethically approved by their own university. They need to attach the ethical approval with the completed application form.

 

APPLICATION FOR APPROVAL

1. The form is completely return

2. The original recommendation letter from home university is attached

3. The requirement as mentioned in Appendix B is fulfilled

4. Students agree with the conditions imposed

5. Ability of the chosen department to provide a supervisor to each of the students

 

STUDENT PREPARATION

1. All teaching & learning will be conducted in English

2.  Students  need  to  be  aware  that  they  might  be  taught  together  with  USM 
students (i.e. clinical teaching or clinical presentation)

3. Main language used by patients and community is Bahasa. Those who have proficiency in Bahasa would get better advantage.

4. Any request related to accommodation will NOT be managed by the secretariat. Those who require rooms need to personally contact the hostel manager via email as return in Appendix B. List of hostel nearby the hospital could be obtained in Appendix D

The conditions of elective posting at the School of Medical Sciences and University Hospital (USM) Kubang Kerian are the following:
  1. You  will  be  registered  as  a  non  graduating  USM  student. Effective Feb 2010, each applicant need to pay RM152.00 per two weeks as elective fees on the day of registration;
  2. The program is ONLY open to the medical student who already in the clinical year at his / her university.
  3. Each of chosen posting need to be carried out within MINIMUM of two (2) weeks and the total number of posting should be MAXIMUM of three(3) in entire duration of placement;
  4. The complete form SHOULD be send back to the chairperson of elective program via email and it need to reach the secretariat AT LEAST 3 MONTHS prior to the commencement of the placement.
  5. You are responsible for your own accommodation.  Should you require any assistant, please kindly contact the hostel manager

  6. You will be subjected to the existing rules and regulations of the School  of  Medical  Sciences  that  may  be  laid  down  by  the school authority from time to time;
  7. You will not be allowed to take charge or treat any patient and will be under the charge of and supervised by specialist or senior consultants;
  8. All information, statistical data, medical records etc. obtained during your clinical attachments are strictly   confidential and shall not be used for publications;
  9. You should ensure that you have adequate means of support and funds to meet all expenses during your stay in this country and you have to get the necessary clearance from the Immigration Authority (for overseas students only);
  10. You are required to adhere to the School dress regulation as attached in Appendix C;
  11. Not  withstanding  the  above,  the  Dean  reserves  the  right  to terminate your elective at any time without giving a reason.

Appendix C

SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA


DRESS REGULATON FOR MEDICAL SCIENCE STUDENTS

The  following  dress  regulation  for  medical  students  of  the  School  of
Medical Sciences is effective from the 1985/86 session.

This dress regulation is defined in a general way based on the following characteristics:-

  1. Safety at the laboratory and hospital
  2. Islamic value and culture
  3. Professional requirements
 
A.      ATTIRE WHILE ATTENDING LECTURES AND TUTORIALS

Men’s Attire

  1. Shirts with collars
    (T-shirts are not allowed)
  2. Long pants
    (Jeans are not allowed)
  3. Shoes and socks
    (Slippers, sandals and sports shoes are not allowed)
  4. “Songkok” (head wear) is allowed if you wish
    ‘Kopiah’ or ‘Serban’ is not allowed
  5. Cloaks are not allowed
  6. Name tag should be worn at all times

Women’s Attire

  1. T-shirts and jean are not allowed
  2. The dress length should not exceed the ankle but should be below the knee
  3. Low-cut dresses are not allowed
  4. Sleeveless dresses are not allowed
  5. Tight skirts with slits are not allowed
  6. Mini  ‘Telekong’ (head  covering) is  allowed  with  the  following criteria:-
    -     the  length  of  its  fronts  and  back  should  not  exceed  the waistline
    -     the sides should not exceed the elbows
    -     dark coloured cloth is not allowed
    -     the   ‘telekung’   should   not   cover   the   ears   when   the stethoscope is used and the stethoscope must be outside of the ‘telekung’
  7. Veils are not allowed
  8. Wearing of ornaments such a earring, necklace, bracelet etc. should be minimized and preferably avoided altogether
  9. Name tag should be worn and affixed to the dress
  10. Sports shoes are not allowed

B. ATTIRE WHILE IN HOSPITAL

Apart from the above conditions, students are to observe the following:-

Men’s Attire

  1. Neckties should be worn
  2. Lab costs should be properly worn
    (also should be worn at the laboratory)

Women’s Attire

1.         Lab coats should be properly worn.  If a mini ‘telekung’ is worn, the lab cost should be worn over the mini ‘telekung’.

C.      GENERAL REGULATION FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN

  1. The  dress  code  that  is  required  at  certain  places  by  the Hospital’s authority should be fully observed;
  2. Exposed hair should be kept short and neat;
  3. Fingernails should always be short and clean
  4. Clothes should always be clean and properly worn;
  5. Any other items which are in vogue but do not confirm to normal professional expectations would not be allowed e.g. earring for men.
