CPC 11/04/2019: A WORTHWHILE JOURNEY

CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL CONFERENCE, SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES USM

by Department of Family Medicine

MMA-CPD Points: 1

Short synopsis:

Obesity is a global pandemic. In Malaysia, the prevalence of obesity had increased by 302% in just under two decades (NHMS 2015). Obesity can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, gall stones, and some cancers like breast, uterine and colon cancer. It affects quality of life and causes physical changes like breathlessness, snoring, sleep apnoea, tiredness, difficulty with physical activity and arthritis. Obesity can also lead to psychological conditions like low self-esteem and depression. A multi-factorial model for the etiology of obesity makes treatment becomes a challenge in healthcare. Multi-component programs have become a necessity and should include a combination of nutritional, physical activity, and cognitive behavioral approaches to target weight reduction. Primary care physicians are often the first health care provider with whom patients discuss weight loss concerns and goals. This provide an excellent opportunity to have a meaningful and motivating conversation in choosing a healthier lifestyle.
