Advanced Master of Medicine - Neurology [A.M.Med Neurology (USM)]
 
 
1. BACKGROUND AND COURSE DESCRIPTION:
 
The USM Department of Neurosciences of the School of Medical Sciences is currently the leading provider of the comprehensive neurological and neurosurgical services to cater the needs of the whole population in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. This civil responsibility and achievement is made possible with the availability of state of the art facilities for patient services whilst ensuring concurrent high quality teaching and research for  medical, surgical and other allied health trainees.
 
As the Malaysia's forerunner in providing clinical and basic neurosciences training for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and building on from the success of the Masters of Surgery - Neurosurgery since 2001, the Department has launched for the first time in Malaysia, a new residency training program in Neurology since June 2007 to fulfill the need of the nation in this specialised field.
 
This is a three-year residency training program by coursework leading to the award of USM Advanced Master of Medicine - Neurology. The main objective of this program is to train physicians to serve as effective neurologists. who can recognise and manage patients with neurological problems as well as consultancy roles for other medical consultants, conducting research in neurosciences and provide continuing training for medical under- and post-graduates.
 
Although the course is intended for local Malaysian physicians, foreign nationals are invited and encouraged o apply, provided that they meet the entry criteria. Candidates are strongly advised to discuss their expression of interest ahead of submitting a formal application with the Program Coordinator (see details below) to avoid disappointment with their applications for this neurology residency training program.
 
 
2. FORMAT OF ASSESSMENT:
 
This program would be conducted in 2 components: Theory and Continuous clinical training.
The continuing course assessments is divided in 2 phases of this 3-year training program:
Phase 1 (Year 1) : Continuous assessment and log book by supervisor (50%); Final examination (50%): OSCE 30% and VIVA20%
Phase 2 (Year 2 and 3 ) : Continuous assessment (50%); Final examination (50%): Theory 12.5% Long and short cases 25% and VIVA 12.5%
(Note that the successful completion of each phase is  mandatory before recommendation can be made to ensue into the next phase till graduation). 
 
3. ADMISSION CRITERIA :
 
  • Master of Medicine – M.Med Medicine
  • Master of Paediatrics
  • M.R.C.P with 18 months of experience in Medicine/ Paediatrics.
  • Any other degree equivalent to the above in Medicine/ Paediatrics.
  • Course duration is minimum of 3 years and maximum of 5 years.
  • Training will be managed by the Department of Neurosciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia and conducted cooperatively with other universities in Malaysia as well as the Ministry of Health of Malaysia. The degree will be awarded by “Universiti Sains Malaysia”.
