Dr Clare Guilding is the Dean of Academic Affairs elect, at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia. Prior to moving to NUMed in January 2017 she was employed in the School of Medical Education at Newcastle University in the UK, undertaking roles including MBBS Deputy Degree Programme Director and co-lead of the Clinical Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Prescribing strand. In her tenure there, she was instrumental in the development of the new pharmacology and therapeutics curriculum for the MBBS programme which included a range of innovations in curriculum design and delivery to provide students with an experience which more closely mirrors the clinical workplace. In 2015 Dr Guilding was co-opted to the British Pharmacological Society’s (BPS) Education and Training committee, to work as one of a core team of four individuals leading a project to develop the Society's new UK undergraduate pharmacology curriculum, which was launched at the BPS annual conference in 2016.
Dr Guilding’s innovative teaching and leadership have been recognised nationally through the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) EDG Educator Innovator Award 2016, the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) Education Prize 2015 and a university nomination to the Times Higher Education Most Innovative Teacher of the Year award 2016. Internally, she won the Newcastle University Student Union Overall Teaching Excellence Award in 2015 and the Vice Chancellor’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2016. She has a first class honours degree and PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh and worked for eight years conducting postdoctoral neuropharmacology research at Glasgow and Manchester Universities.
