Dr. Igor Iezhitsa has been in the field of pharmacology more than 20 years. Since the beginning of his professional career, he has been deeply involved in academic and research activities. Igor played a pivotal role in the study of new group of CNS stimulants in the Volgograd State Medical University (Russia) in 1994-2000, and has since been involved in screening and preclinical study of many new pharmacological compounds. Dr. Igor’s research interests include experimental neuropharmacology, neuroprotection and toxicology. His special field of interest is role of magnesium (Mg) in ocular pathological conditions. He has been one of the main proponents of Mg research for several years, and it a true stand out in this field. His resent experimental study (UiTM, Malaysia) focused on pathophysiological and pharmacological role of Mg in ocular diseases and especially its neuroprotective role in glaucoma. Dr. Igor has published more than 60 articles in indexed journals and has authored 5 books and chapters with Russian and international publishers.
Proposed topicfor presentation during Symposium is focused on neuroprotective role of Mg acethyltaurate (MgAT). MgAT is a natural blocker of the NMDA-type glutamatergic type ion channel. Experimental findings have shown that MgAT can protect against oxidative stress in endothelin-induced RGC loss. It has unique channel blocker properties that result in a preferential inhibition of excessive (excitotoxic) neuronal activation by high levels of glutamate. In a experimental model, MgAT was neuroprotective as can be seen from its effect on maintaining/preserving RGCs.
