Rusli Ismail joined UnisZA in November 2016 as a professor at the Faculty of Medicine. Prior to UnisZA, Rusli was a professor at the Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS at the Faculty of Medicine in University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur where he joined after leaving USM Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine.  Rusli teaches clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. His research interest is in “personalised medicine and pharmacogenetics” that grew from his work in clinical pharmacokinetics. His main focus currently is on drug use disorder and HIV especially as it pertains to methadone maintenance therapy for opiate use disorder. Rusli has also been active in civil societies. It was when he was the Honorary Secretary of the Malaysian AIDS Council that he began to become especially interested in MMT and this culminated in him helping get the Government to redraw drug policy to include “harm reduction”. Rusli has published extensively and has been invited to many international conferences. He was recently invited by the Saudi Government to deliver a talk on “MMT in Malaysia” that was to act as a nucleus for a similar approach in Saudi for their similar problems.
