The Department of Medical Education (DME), School of Medical Sciences was set up as an integral component of the medical school, directing its services in faculty development, research and evaluation as well as advisory and consultancy activities in medical education. Its main activity is faculty development, primarily directed towards making faculty members into more effective teachers. The Department’s yearly faculty development planner offers workshops and related activities to cater for the various needs of faculty members in their multifaceted roles in an innovative medical education programme. The DME also collaborates with medical teachers at the school, national as well as international levels in conducting educational research, collecting and disseminating educational research findings and assisting in evaluating educational process and outcomes. The DME also proactively promotes the SMS medical education programme through an organised effort at international public relations and networking. In line with the SMS philosophy of producing competent medical practitioners who are able to identify themselves as part and parcel of the health care team, the DME is now in a strong position to provide assistance to other medical and allied health professional institutions which aspire to develop a similar philosophy and curricular approaches in their undergraduate medical education programme.
